Breaking Records … and a Few Bottles

By: Nightclub and Bar

“My hands were slippery during the actual competition, so I kept dropping bottles,” laughs The Shout House bartender Chris Raph. “Other than that, I think it went really well.”

With the spotlights from four local television crews trained on him and more than 300 guests watching, Raph set out to break the record for “most cocktails prepared in 60 minutes” for Guinness World Records on April 16.

The Shout House has been open in Minneapolis for nearly five years now, and the venue is known for its dueling pianists belting out tunes nightly. Now, it’s famous for world-record-holder Raph as well, who made 662 different cocktails in under an hour, nearly doubling the previous record.

Fiscal ruin of the Western world beckons

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Events have already forced Premier Brian Cowen to carry out the harshest assault yet seen on the public services of a modern Western state. He has passed two emergency budgets to stop the deficit soaring to 15pc of GDP.

They have not been enough. The expert An Bord Snip report said last week that Dublin must cut deeper, or risk a disastrous debt compound trap. A further 17,000 state jobs must go (equal to 1.25m in the US), though unemployment is already 12pc and heading for 16pc next year.

Education must be cut 8pc. Scores of rural schools must close, and 6,900 teachers must go. "The attacks outlined in this report would represent an education disaster and light a short fuse on a social timebomb", said the Teachers Union of Ireland.

Facts on Foods That Speed Up Metabolism

By Lynn Harris

Reving Your Engine

Metabolism is a process that breaks down carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the food you eat to make the energy your body needs to build and maintain itself. Proper nutrition keeps your body functioning well, but the right foods can also speed up your metabolism.

The amount of calories you eat, your genes and the amount of calories that you burn while eating and exercising determine your metabolism. The body breaks down carbohydrates, then fats and finally proteins. The food that you eat makes up 5 to 10 percent of your metabolic rate.

Stocking Your Cupboard

Foods that speed up your metabolism are vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, fish, healthy fats and whole grains. Look for these vegetables when shopping: spinach, broccoli, carrots, asparagus, cabbage, beet roots, assorted beans and dark, leafy vegetables.

Dinner with Your Gin?

By: Nightclub and Bar

Gin’s delectable nature lends it to use in a variety of cocktails, and the different styles of gin on the market today broadens the options even more. While many operators and diners are just coming around to the notion of cocktails with dinner, the concept of gin cocktails to accompany a meal was warmly received at a special dinner held at the famed Antoine’s Restaurant in New Orleans during Tales of the Cocktail.

The mixology team from Pernod Ricard was in top form and gin’s versatility on full display. Adding to the juniper love-fest, Desmond Payne, master distiller for Beefeater and Beefeater 24, and Sean Harrison, master distiller for Plymouth Gin, were on hand. Payne gave a succinct explanation for the inspiration behind Beefeater 24: “Tea.”

While traveling internationally, he found himself mixing a splash of tea to his gin and tonic to atone for the lack of quality tonics available, and it struck him that tea further accentuated the botanicals within the gin and added interesting nuances.

Exercise and longevity: get moving

By Jeannine Stein

You may have heard the advice "If you exercise, you'll live longer." The good news -- or the bad news, if you hate doing anything more active than downloading iTunes -- is that it's true. Research backs this up.

A 2007 study in the Journal of the American Medical Assn. found that fitter people lived longer, even if they had extra pounds around the middle. Among 2,603 adults 60 and older enrolled in that longitudinal study, the fittest people (those who did best on a treadmill test) also had the lowest risk factors for hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Most of the negative changes to our bodies over time can be chalked up to two things, says Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, head of the department of kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: normal aging and disease-related aging (that is, changes accelerated by illnesses and conditions such as diabetes and heart disease). Exercise, he says, can reduce the severity of both types.

Eating to live longer: It can be a page turner

By Elena Conis

Acai berries, green tea, soy, olive oil and sweet potatoes have all been hyped for their life-prolonging potential. Diets rich in vegetables, fruits and grains, and low on meat may help prevent chronic disease.

But so far there's only one dietary approach shown to lengthen life span: eating less. Of course, a dearth of firm data hasn't stopped doctors, scientists and nutritional dilettantes from penning anti-aging diet books. Here are a few of them.

Sears Is Not A Retailer

By Sham Gad

Patient, value-seeking investors have an excellent investment opportunity today in Sears Holdings (Nasdaq:SHLD) - if they can look beyond the trees and see the forest. While it is indeed true that Sears currently operates as a retailer, investors may be missing the boat if they ignore this company based on this premise alone.

Focus on the Jockey, Not the Horse

The most important consideration regarding Sears is Chairman Eddie Lampert. Since his days as a hedge fund manager in his early 20s, Eddie has proved to be a brilliant capital allocator and businessman. And if he wasn't in charge of Sears, I wouldn't be writing this article.

In addition to his brilliance, Lampert owns more than 50% of Sears' shares, many of which were bought at prices that vastly exceed Sears' share price today.

Seven Secrets to Making Sensational Martinis

From The American Mixologist

In the book Casino Royale, James Bond ordered a dry martini made with “three measures of Gordon’s Gin, one of vodka, half a measure of Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large, thin slice of lemon peel.

” This famous cocktail is now referred to as the 007 Martini. What you might not know is that by the time Bond hit the big screen in the 1962 movie Dr. No the drink had slimmed down to a more svelte “vodka martini, shaken not stirred.”

The martini, the undisputed king of all cocktails, tops the short list of drinks that every bar must excel at making. It doesn’t have to be fancy and elaborate, just made well made and great tasting.

Furthermore, in this day of heightened competition, the case can be made that every bar should adopt a signature martini, a drink that they can stake a claim to and build a reputation on as a worthy watering hole.

Putting Up with Caterers & Event Planners

From Bartender Confessions

Warning: If you ARE a caterer, you will be offended, if you are a Mobile Bartender, chances are you have been offended BY a caterer!

In my experience as a Mobile Bartender, I have often noticed that myself and my bartending staff has always run into problems with caterers. It seems that there are power struggles and ego-trips at play with both parties…especially when YOU have been hired by the Host, NOT the caterer.

Caterers and party planners like to have full control of everything and so they may start telling you how to do your job or treat you like one of their employees.

This quick article is intended to help YOU (the Mobile Bartender) “deal” with caterers during your events. So, let’s ALL put our egos aside and take some advice that does work:

1. Caterers ARE Control Freaks! They have to be, that’s why they are so good at what they do! So you must accept that fact and understand how their mind works if you want to have a pleasant night while working with them

Refusing Service Without Angst

From The American Mixologist

I received the following email. I tend bar in a busy, tourist area on the coast in central California. I have taken both the TAM course and the new web course at Cheers University Online. I am confident that I can recognize the stages of intoxication, and I could probably write a report on how alcohol affects the body and mind.

Nobody seems to go into detail about how to actually deal with an intoxicated guest. I know it should never get to that point, but sometimes it does, or it gets very close. I always hear “be courteous and professional, friendly but firm.” Or “be discreet, don’t embarrass the guest, and don’t ever say, “Sir, you’re drunk.”

Sometimes I’m the only one working the bar. No manager, no owner. Give me some actual dialogue. What EXACTLY do you say to a guest who is getting to the point of intoxication? Please give me some actual examples of what might be said to diffuse a situation with an emotional customer. Thanks for your help. —CJ

Don't Lose Sleep Over Insomnia

Do you have trouble sleeping? If the answer is no, count yourself lucky and read no further. Those who fall asleep easily and sleep soundly throughout the night are truly blessed.

If, on the other hand, you're in the third of the population who has a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep, you are caught in a terrible double bind.

People with chronic insomnia are challenged on two fronts.First, they rarely wake up feeling refreshed. Second, they are told that their lack of a good night's sleep might be harming their health.

In recent years, studies have shown the negative health consequences linked to inadequate sleep. Insomniacs could be a hazard on the highways because of poor judgment or slowed reaction times.

Courage That Changes Your Life

by Chris Widener

Courage. It is a word that conjures up images of great and dramatic actions. And yet I realize that we all have the opportunity to be courageous every day, in small and large ways. And it is when we choose to be courageous that we change our lives and the lives of those around us.

Can you name anything of any significance that did not emanate from some sort of courageous decision? I can’t. Think of the changes that we have experienced in the last few decades and trace them back to their initial decision. Chances are, someone exhibited courage.

So what is courage? It is simply acting on what we want to do, regardless of any fear we may have. It is the choice to disregard worry. It is the choice to do right, to pursue our dreams, to be successful people, to lead the way for others.

Añejo Rum -- New Darling Of The Snifter Set

From The American Mixologist

Añejo rums are surging in popularity. Smooth and luxurious, aged rums have more in common with a cognac or sherry than they do with their unaged counterparts. They are elegant, sophisticated spirits best appreciated in a brandy snifter.

“Not everyone can jaunt off to the Caribbean, but sipping a fine old rum may be the next best thing,” says Tom Valdes, president of Cruzan Rum, Ltd.

“There is a cachet surrounding rum. They are made in exotic places, and imbued with rich aromas and captivating flavors. And that’s exactly how they should be marketed—as a romantic adventure in a glass.”

A Life Without Debt: Grudgingly Taking the Punishment

by Sadie Morris

The other day I was feeling punished for my good financial habits. My savings are earning pitiful interest, thanks to the low rates in place to prop up the economy. There are no mortgage or housing breaks for me, since I don’t carry a mortgage.

My credit cards have had their limits cut and interest rates raised. (Not that this really matters to me because I don’t carry a balance and have rarely approached the limits.

Still, because it wasn’t my choice it grates on me.) I have to pay more for everything and every month is a battle with my banks to fight off the new fees they want to slap on me for products that were previously free.

My taxes are going up and will continue to do so to cover the debt that the government is racking up at an alarming rate.

Good Debt vs. Bad Debt… The Answer May Surprise You

From Loral Langemeier

In today’s economy there’s a lot of chatter regarding debt. People who have over extended themselves are scrambling to pay down debt when the focus should be on creating new cash. If you’re in trouble with mounting consumer debt the only choice for you is to find ways to put more money in your pocket.

Once you have a Cash Machine plan in action you need to focus your attention on keeping that income coming in and creating a cycle of cash flow. The biggest slowdown of a new Cash Machine is once you start making money you go into a continuous cycle to pay down debt.

This will get you nowhere fast. In fact it will stop you in your tracks. In six months you’ll find yourself stuck with a Cash Machine that’s not profiting because your money went straight to your consumer debt.

Where Do I Need A Bartending License?

by Ray Sherman

One of the first and most asked questions to people looking to get a bartending job is "Do I need A License?" The answer is probably not. Not in most states but there are I believe 2 as of 2009 that require a license, Utah and Wisconsin and the license is very easy to obtain.

This wild myth about needing a bartenders license is everywhere and it amazes me how prevelant it is on the web. I believe it started with the bartending schools. I think they made it sound like a certificate is some sort of license and from there it just spread.

Another possibility is TIPS. This stands for "Training for Intervention Procedures" and is a popular course that teaches responsibility basics for bartenders. It is not a license although these days it's becoming very popular for establishments to require the course to work as a bartender in their establishment.

This is because their liability insurance is decreased by having you take the course. It's not a bad idea to take it as it's very short and having a certificate of completion certainly won't hurt. Cost is about $40. It can be taken online in most states. This course will no doubt be mandatory in the coming years.

10 Secrets to a Better Love Life

By R. Morgan Griffin

Most of us can remember the hot -- and frequent -- spicy moments when the romance was new with our partner. But eventually the fire of a good love life may die down. Over time, the sexy nightie languishes hidden in the sock drawer, the massage oil gathers dust next to the athlete's foot powder in the medicine cabinet, and you and your partner have what feels like a humdrum sexual life.

So what is the secret to a better love life that lasts? We asked for some suggestions from two experts on sexuality -- Michael Castleman, author of Great Sex: A Man's Guide to the Secret Principles of Total-Body Sex, and Louanne Cole Weston, PhD, a board certified sex therapist and resident expert for WebMD's "Sex Matters®" message boards.

Make Dates

Castleman and Weston are in firm agreement that couples that have been together for a while need to plan time for sex.

"Make a date for sex," says Castleman, a health journalist who previously answered questions about sexuality submitted to the Playboy advisor. "Don't let it be an afterthought," he tells WebMD.

"Do whatever you like to do beforehand, go to a movie or dinner, take a walk, have a glass of wine by candlelight, whatever the couple likes to do as a couple. But set aside that time."
