Fit for work:- AARP's top firms for those 50+ emphasize workers' health, career development

By Andrea Coombes

For many U.S. workers, their job may seem more a barrier to improving their health than an aid in that effort. Not so for the employees at firms on AARP's list of the 50 "best workplaces" for those 50 and older.

Cornell University, No. 1 on AARP's list this year, offers on-site screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure and depression, plus fitness classes that promote "staying strong" and "core conditioning," as well as walking tours and stress-management tips. Many of these perks are free to employees and retirees.

The Ithaca, N.Y.-based school also works with local doctors in its "program for healthy living," in which employees consult with a doctor to come up with a written guide for exercise and nutrition. Forty-three percent of the university's work force is 50 or older.

Home Is Where the Nest Egg Is

by Robert Powell

Home, for millions of Americans, is not only where the heart is. It's increasingly where the retirement account is, too. Yes, home equity, along with IRAs, 401(k)s and Social Security is viewed as one of the most important sources of retirement income to millions of homeowners.

One recent study showed that home equity represents 21% of the typical pre-retiree's net worth, second only to Social Security at 41%. Another study found one in five retirees and pre-retirees plan to tap their home equity to help fund retirement.

Now, however, the recent and unprecedented decline in home prices is forcing many Americans -- especially those who were banking on the inflated value of their home to make up for paltry savings and falling retirement account balances -- to re-evaluate their retirement plans.

By: Mark Myers

Can you guess what two items of nutrition that most women don't get enough of? You could expect these nutrients to be a problem in non-developed countries, but women in America are missing these. These simple dietary ingredients would solve most women's constipation problems if they weren't forgotten.

Good wine needs a good drink

By Gary Regan

Idon't do wine. I sometimes drink wine, but when I'm not sipping cocktails or tippling whiskey, you're more likely to find me gulping beer than savoring wine. And when it comes to the writing game, apart from the odd tantrum about how the white wine spritzer is the most boring drink in the known universe, I hardly ever mention wine when I put pen to paper.

Luckily for me there are quite a few wineries around that haven't caught on to this, so bottles of vino extraordinaire do appear on my doorstep periodically. When I was coming up through the ranks, way back in the 1970s, there was a certain snobbery attached to wine, and that could be one of the things that made me stick to beer, whiskey and strong cocktails.

That seems to be changing, though, and as bad as things seem at times, here in the 21st century, one of the small signs that actually give me hope for the planet is the fact that snobbery seems to be on the wane.

Real estate Investing – What the Guru’s Won’t Tell You

By: Jules Carney

I have been down the real estate investing path for some years now, and have taken the time to get myself educated. If there is a new book, I have purchased it. If there is a new technique – I have examined it, a new seminar, I have looked at it, and I have been to several.

I have talked to several investors and spent time looking at, and understanding the markets I choose to invest in.It is almost trite to say that I think the best thing you can do for yourself when you enter any investment is to get educated.

In fact, let me say that if you don’t want to take time to get yourself educated, then you are not an investor – you are a gambler – or worse, a fool. I know that sounds harsh – but let’s be honest, why would you put your money into something you have not taken time to understand?

Worse yet, most of us do it anyway, handing our hard earned money (well I think of mine as hard earned) to someone without understanding even the fundamentals of what makes the investment sound, appreciate, depreciate, etc.

10 Tough Ways to Boost Your Bottom Line

by Jeffrey Strain

Faced with record high personal debt levels and ultra-low savings rates, it may be worthwhile for Americans to consider taking the hard way out of debt. When people talk about getting their personal finances in order, they usually try to find the easy way to reduce debt and increase savings.

There are a number of steps you can take that are relatively pain-free and low-cost that will help get you on your way to a better financial position, but this is taking the long term approach. Little steps over a long period of time will add up to big amounts, but it's not the only way to achieve financial freedom.

Another option is to take the hard route. Instead of making small changes, make big changes which can have a large impact. The advantage is that you can put a huge dent into any debt you might have or supercharge your saving rate, with large increases over a short period of time.

Afforadable Luxury— Extra Añejo Tequilas Set a New Standard

From The American Mixologist

The first sniff, sip and swallow will quickly reveal why 100% blue agave tequilas are so tremendously popular. Ounce for ounce, these ultra-premium tequilas are comparable in quality and allure to vintage malts and well-aged cognac.

Their extraordinary characters are so remarkably rich and vibrant that you’re left with the unmistakable conclusion that this is how tequila is meant to taste. These are the best of times for the category.

Interest in handcrafted tequilas has been nothing short of phenomenal and propelled the category to grow a robust 10% in 2007, the steepest increase of the light liquors, outpacing the growth of vodka (6.7%) and rum (5.1%)—this according to the Beverage Information Group.

10 Ways to Protect Your Finances From the Crisis

by Brett Arends

Here are ten things that this financial panic means for you.

1. Check that your bank accounts are federally insured. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) guarantees deposits up to $100,000 per person. If you have to hold more than that, spread it across multiple banks. As a taxpayer you are paying for this insurance. Use it.

2. Make sure your brokerage accounts are federally insured, too. The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) guarantees you at places like Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, E-Trade and the like up to $500,000, including $100,000 worth of cash.

The same rules apply: If you have more to invest, spread it across multiple firms. Note: The SIPC is only there to make sure you get your shares and bonds back if a brokerage fails. It does not, obviously, guarantee those investments' value.

3. Put money in thy purse. If this market and this economy get any tougher, cash isn't just going to be king any more. It's going to be king, queen, emperor, lord high chamberlain, and the whole court – including the royal cat and crazy prince Ruprecht locked in the attic.

The easiest way to make or find a buck is to save it. So take an axe to those family budgets. The restaurant meals. The Super Duper Everything Cable package. The rip-off checking account with the high fees and low interest. It's all costing you.

Affordable Housing Exists, If You Know Where to Look

by Prashant Gopal

Stacy Williams owns a three-bedroom house with a full basement and central air-conditioning in a quiet neighborhood on the upper west side of Youngstown, Ohio. Williams, now 33, was earning $8.05 an hour as a manager at McDonald's when she moved into the house with her husband, a laborer at a construction equipment manufacturer, and son back in 2004.

The couple's combined annual salary was $33,000. But the purchase didn't require much of a financial stretch: The house cost $48,000. "If you have the credit score to do it, there's nothing that can stop you from buying a home in Youngstown," said Williams, whose plans for the house include a second bathroom.

A fallout from the real estate slump is that once again many homeowners are forced to look for homes that are within their budget. Access to cheap adjustable-rate mortgages gave many Americans the chance to live in homes that under normal circumstances they could have never afforded.

The 80/20 Rule & Bartending

From Bartender Confessions

Have you ever heard of the 80/20 Rule? Also known as Pareto Principle, or the Law of a Vital Few, it states that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. This simple, yet powerful Rule can apply to almost every aspect of your life. Today we are going to apply it to Bartending.

80/20 Bartending

This takes me back to last Saturday night’s bartending gig at a clients home. The event was actually a charity auction that took place on their tennis court. (Yes, they had a tennis court and a HUGE home!) Over 200 guests showed up to get drunk and bid on some ridiculous stuff-one LIVE auction item included Mike Eisner’s old Mighty Ducks Box seats and another was an Andy Warhol original.

I had a tip jar out and I was working my butt of to keep these thirsty guests happy. I was “in the zone” as I like to call it. Just as you finish pouring those last cocktails, another guest has given you a big order. You just have enough time to wipe your brow, clean your shaker and keep moving! The music is blasting behind you and everyone gathers to watch your hands move like lightening. I love it!
